Ryan Garza | The Flint JournalPolice officers from several agencies gather at the scene of a shooting on Flint's north side Tuesday where a Flint police officer was injured.

FLINT, Michigan — A Flint man who was shot several times after allegedly attacking a Flint police officer will face criminal charges.

The suspect, 44, was in good condition at a local hospital Wednesday and has not been arraigned.

Flint police opened fire on the man about 10:20 a.m. Tuesday after they were called to the man’s home on Ronnie Lane off York Avenue for a domestic violence call involving his live-in girlfriend.

Flint police Lt. T.P. Johnson said the man came around the corner with a pair of garden shears after the girlfriend let officers into the home and called for him.

The suspect allegedly hit one of the officers in the chest with the shears, then cut the officer on the left arm twice with a knife when the two officers tried to subdue him.

The injured officer’s partner opened fire when the hurt cop pushed the suspect away, police said.

The injured officer was treated and released at a local hospital.

Prosecutors charged the suspect with assault with intent to do great bodily harm and resisting arrest causing injury, said Johnson.

The suspect faces separate charges for allegedly assaulting the girlfriend, who Johnson said was severely beaten, as well as a neighbor and the officer who shot him.

An internal investigation into the shooting is being conducted.

Flint resident Tatyana Peacock, who lives on York Avenue, said it was “a little scary” that things seemed to get out of hand.

“It’s a shame for anyone to get hurt. There’s too much killing,” she said. “It’s scary that it’s this close.”

Lorraine Caldwell said she ran outside after hearing the noise from the shooting two blocks away.

“It’s a concern that the officer got hurt, but really, we’re concerned all the time. This sort of thing happens all the time,” said Caldwell.

Flint City Council President Delrico Loyd said he hopes the injured officer has a complete recovery.

“It’s just a true testament of the commitment of our officers to do whatever is needed for the safety of our residents,” he said. “And the fact of the matter is, the officers have to safeguard themselves, as well as the victim.”

Staff writer Allison Bush contributed to this report.

Experts on both sides of gun control believe 54-year-old Flint man had right to defend himself

Ryan Garza | The Flint JournalThe house on Sally Court in Flint where police say one person died and two others were wounded when they attempted to rob a man around 11 p.m. Wednesday on Sally Court near Fleming Road. Five people approached the man while he was at his home. The man, who had a gun, shot at the would-be robbers, killing one and injuring two others, police said. The two men were taken to a local hospital, but their conditions are unknown, police said.
FLINT, Michigan — People on both sides of the gun control debate said it appears a City of Flint worker was within his rights when he opened fire on a group of teens who police say tried to rob him in his driveway.

Sheldon Golden, 54, was standing in the driveway of his Sally Court home on the city’s north side about 11 p.m. Wednesday when he was approached by a group of five people armed with a gun, police said.

Golden opened fire when they tried to rob him, killing one and wounding two other teens, police said. The two wounded teens were listed in good condition Thursday afternoon.

The other three suspected robbers ran off before police arrived.

Golden could not be reached for comment and police have not released the name or age of the slain dead.

Neighbors praised Golden for protecting his house.

“He has to do what he has to do to protect himself,” said Melissa Taylor, 40, who lives down the street from Golden. “I would have probably done the same thing. I have two kids.”

Next door neighbor Mary DeLoach, 71, said she was awakened by the gunfire.

“I heard the shots and I hit the floor,” she said.

She described Golden as a “beautiful person” who keeps to himself and has always been polite.

DeLoach said she thought Golden did the right thing.

“All these young people; they need to do something with their lives,” she said.

Marty Hayes, president of the Washington state-based Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network, said it appears Golden had a right to protect himself.

“There is legitimacy in the person’s actions,” he said. “The gentleman had a right to feel threatened.”

Hayes said the man had a right protect himself from the gunman, as well as the four other males who were present even if they weren’t armed.

“Four people would have sufficient strength to kill him if they wanted,” Hayes said.

A spokesman for a Washington, D.C.-based gun control advocacy group agreed that Golden had a right to protect himself.

“We’ve never taken issue with law abiding citizens who have a weapon legally,” said Peter Hamm, communications director of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. “They have the right to defend themselves when in danger.”

It will ultimately be up to the Genesee County Prosecutor’s office to decide if Golden’s actions were justified.

Prosecutor David Leyton said he has not seen reports on the case yet and declined to comment.

Charges are pending against the two teens who were wounded, said assistant Genesee County prosecutor Randall Petrides.

Petrides declined to address specifics of the Golden case but said “in general, if a person feels if his life is in danger, he can protect himself.”

Prosecutors said they could not recall if charges were issued against a Flint homeowner who fatally shot an intruder in November after wrestling a gun away from the man.

Webs,

Most of the stories in here are about the victim being badly injured or killed. I am relieved this man was able to defend himself and was not physically injured or killed. I can't imagine what he is going through psychologically and emotionally.

I just hope that he does not face criminal or civil charges for his actions. It would send a very bad message to those who commit these crimes on our citizens. I do not support vigilantly behavior, but I fully support self defense. People should have the right to defend themselves, their home and their family without fear of criminal or civil prosecution.

That used to be so safe! That is next to Doyle Ryder School and University Park. There was another shooting there less than a month ago. So close to Downtown and the development zones.

Perhaps there is a reason that the Journal didn't mention the two black males wearing black shirts seen running from the scene.
