I recently spoke with Patrick Clawson. former CNN reporter now living in Flint area, about how he exposed the RASCO debacle. It seems Kristen Longley was telling him about the wonderful news from the state and he asked her if anyone had investigated Richard A. Short. Longley purportedly said no because she believed the state had done a thorough investigation.

I asked for her number because I was going to research the guy, but she acted like I was hitting on her, said Clawson. Clawson then stated how it had only taken him 15 minutes on the computer to find out the guy was a complete fraud and a convicted con man. The story blew up and Short ended up being arrested. The state had egg on their face.

Needless to say, Longley was angry when Clwson broke the story in lansing the next day and did not tell her. When he reminded her she refused to give him her number she allegedly hung up on him.

Thinking of that I too started looking at the Oak Park development. family matters kept me from completing the research, but Flint Attorney Terry Bankert and radio host Ryan Eashoo did their own work.

FEDS AWARD A $3.7 MILLION DOLLAR GRANT TO A CORPORATION OWNED BY GLENN ANTHONY WILSON RESIDING HERE AT 1009 PERSHING FLINT MI. HE IS 28 YEARS OF AGE.

The Flint Journal recently reported that a $3.7 Million dollar Federal Grant was awared to Flint based Communities First, Inc. They identified this as a Flint based Non Profit owned by Glenn Wilson. My recollection is that non profits are not owned by an individual. Interesting! The projects purpose is to create a 24 Unit Apartment Complex in the unused Oak School site.

In June of this year the Journal reported the project would also get a $1 Million dollar Federal stimulus fund award from funds given to the Genesee County Land Bank. Wilson had said construction would begin in 2012 ans occupation to be in 2013.

With assistance of internet research the entity Communities First Inc shows a Flint address of 1009 Pershing St. Michigan records show it to be a Michigan Corporation Charter Number 70907Q. The registered agent is Glenn A. Wilson address of 1009 Pershing St.

Records show there are two associated business at the 1009 Pershing location. They are ; Capital Business Development Firm Inc, Micro-Enterprise Institute Inc, and Capitol Business Development Firm Inc.

Records show that Glenn Anthony Wilson dob 3/1984 age 28 resides at 1009 Pershing St. He is shown as having registered to vote at this address 08/24/2010. Another person is also shown at this address.
From Facebook friends additional information was gleaned.
Donald Richards said the equalization website shows Ms. Essence James 28 to be the owner of 1009 Pershing.

Ryan Eashoo added " Research futher. I don't believe he is even origionally from here. ( Could be wrong.)

Eashoo continued " His Architect is Gazall Lewis"

George Hamo all i care about is how does he qualify for 3.7 million? & if he doesn't how did he get it as the sole owner of the non profit? and why did the flint officials recommend this to the feds after flint officials did their supposed "due diligence"?
Holly Baker Many of the Senior living places have been closed in Flint. There is a reason for that. It makes no sense to reuse that building for that at all. There should be people there and building, etc...if move in should be next yr. The building would have to be up to several codes before move in was even possible. I think that this is unreasonable and lacks logic....I see why there would be questions.
George Hamo -Holly gets the prize! The $ made is in the construction-the 3.7 mill. Afterwards the place doesn't service the overhead & eventually closes. Unless the city bails it out w more fed funds. But the real $ is made up front.

3.7 million dollars to renovate Oak Park School? What kind of lofts are these goona be? With the cost of demolition and then upgrades this doesn't add up. Don't know if I would live there.

Flint developer wants to transform old Oak School into senior housing

June 3, 2011 10:00 AM

By Kristin Longley | Flint Journal

FLINT, Michigan — The city may finally have a viable plan to breathe life into the old Oak School, a historic site dating back more than a century in Flint’s Grand Traverse neighborhood.

If a local developer gets his way — and $5 million from the federal government — the stately former Flint school with its tall windows and arched entryways could become low-income housing for senior citizens.

It’s the potential solution that neighbors of the Oak School have been waiting for since the red brick building was boarded up after it emptied in 1998.

Formerly a Flint elementary school, the district closed it in 1976 due to declining enrollment and it later was home to Community Mental Health programs.

“Oak School is an anchor property and a very visible property in the Grand Traverse Neighborhood,” said Doug Weiland, executive director of the Land Bank. “This will clean up the property, make it attractive and it will really help rejuvenate that portion of the neighborhood.”

The project hinges on a $4-million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that would be used along with about $1 million in federal stimulus funds awarded to the Land Bank for neighborhood stabilization.

The grant application was boosted by a letter from U.S. Rep. Dale Kildee, D-Flint, who wrote that the project would “provide necessary housing for the underserved in Flint.”

Leading the initiative is developer Communities First, a Flint-based company formed in October and owned by Glenn Wilson, in partnership with North Haven, Conn.-based New Samaritan Corp.

According to its website, New Samaritan has been developing housing for the elderly since 1970
.

The goal is to keep the historic site’s character — such as the tiles, the wainscotting and the overarching roof — while transforming the old classrooms into apartment units for senior citizens.

Wilson said he believes the city is in need of senior housing and he hopes to fill the void.

There are currently about 1,000 people on the waiting list for Flint public housing, about 70 of them are senior citizens, said Rod Slaughter, director of the Flint Housing Commission.

“With 24 units, I think it could be successful,” he said. “A new place to stay, they would definitely take advantage of that, especially if it’s subsidized.”

According to HUD’s website, the grant funds are for capital advances to finance the construction, rehabilitation or acquisition of housing for “very low-income elderly persons,” and for rent subsidies to make the housing affordable.

The application is expected to be sent in this month and Wilson hopes to hear back by December, he said.

Should Communities First be awarded the funding, construction is expected to begin in 2012 and the building could begin to be occupied by January 2013, according to city council documents.

The units would be about 540 square feet, complete with a bedroom, living room, bathroom and functioning kitchen. The building would have to remain senior housing for 40 years, according to the terms of the funding.

Oak School sits just a few blocks west of downtown, where several successful redevelopment projects have taken place in recent years. The historic Durant Hotel, which also was owned by the Land Bank, was transformed into a 93-unit apartment building.

Ideas for reviving Oak School over the years have included a mix of office and residential use and community education, but a lack of funding has stymied any serious proposals from coming to fruition.

Parts of the building are believed to date to 1898 and an addition built in 1955 includes a community room and a gym, according to Flint Journal files.

Tom Wyatt, president of the Grand Traverse District Neighborhood Association, said the group has been trying to bring attention to the Oak Schools’s plight. He said he’s pretty confident the idea could work, if it’s properly funded.

“It’s something the neighborhood has been trying to do for years,” he said. “It would bring a little bit more pride to the residents.”

New Samaritan has no corporate standing in Michigan. There is no indication in any of their literature that they plan to venture outside of Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Longley needs more info. Who is the developer/contractor? Does Wilson have a builders license?
