Prosecutor looks to padlock Flint home after fourth drug raid

FLINT, MI -- Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton is seeking court approval to order the padlocking of a home that police say has repeatedly been used as a drug house.
Leyton on Wednesday filed a public nuisance action against the home at 338 Allendale Place, which has been raided by police four times this year, according to a news release issued by assistant prosecuting attorney John Potbury.
Police recently discovered a methamphetamine lab at the home near Mclaren Regional Medical Center and four people were arrested, according to Potbury.
Genesee Circuit Judge Joseph Farah issued a temporary restraining order prohibiting illegal activity at the home in what Leyton called a first step in having the home padlocked.
Prosecutors will ask the court to convert the restraining order to a preliminary injunction in a July 2 hearing.
"We will not allow drug dealers to take over our neighborhoods and endanger our
safety and security," Leyton said in the news release. "If drug dealing is discovered, not only will the perpetrators be arrested and convicted, they will also lose their homes and possessions through the laws of Michigan...
"There were busts at this residence on January 18, 26, February 7 and May 22. Because of the frequency of the criminal activity, we were able to use the public nuisance statute to begin padlocking procedures." |

As far as i am concerned michigansue and clear the air have the right ideas. Too many "investor" landlords don't perform background checks (too expensive) and ignore the complaints filed by neighbors. time to toughen up the standards.
Public Housing supposedly has a zero tolerance for drugs, but that premise is laughable.

The neighbors in that neighborhood are struggling to keep it livable....and for the most part it really is. But we need to do something with slum landlords all over the city. When they encroach on nice, established neighborhoods, it's worse. Plus, most of SLLs are so arrogant! We as citizens need to step up, too. Look up the property on the city's website - then call the rental agency. Most of city and county offiicals are wayout of touch. They have no idea how serious situations are in Flint - they go home to the 'burbs or Lansing after work. I'm calling 3 landlords today. I've documented activity and blight for about a month on each house.

Half the bars in Genesee County operate like "drug houses' ...time to get out a whole lot of padlocks.

Good deprive another slumlord of the profits that have ruined your city, it is the "don't care" attitude of the slumlords that give shelter to these vermin.

thats funny....Its not the house that is selling the drugs....... pad lock the house and they move into a different one...... how about padlocking the drug dealers , then the house can be rented and the city can get tax revenue.....but flint doesnt need the tax revenue right?

[b] i'd bet there's a whole bunch of houses this could happen to in the flint area - the neighbors need to step up and report all the illegal activity they see on a daily basis - that's if they're willing to help - intimidation sometimes makes people think twice about what the see and hear - also, some of the neighbors don't want to see the activity end because they are the activity.

Did Leyton actually say that with a straight face? Has he actually ever been in Flint? I'd say he's missing something rather enormous.

It shouldn't take four incidents. It should have been padlocked after the third incident at most, preferably the second incident.

This group along with others such as Attorney Kathy Dones Carson filed many of these complaints against drug dealers and their landlords to rid the neighborhoods of nuisance houses. |
