FLINT, MI – A man was shot and killed inside his vehicle Tuesday outside a liquor store on Flushing Road.

Police at the scene said a man was shot about 6:30 p.m. in the parking lot of K& J Liquor, 2638 Flushing Road.

The man died at a hospital, police said.

A champagne colored Lincoln sedan was up on the curb across the street from the liquor store.

Police did not provide any other details.

It was the third shooting about an hour, police said.

Flushing Road was blocked off between Milbourne and Forest Hill avenues during the investigation.

The first critical shooting of the night was at a gas station on Clio Road. Police said a man was shot outside the BP gas station at Clio Road and West Myrtle Avenue and was then taken to Hurley Medical Center in a personal vehicle.

Police did not have any information about the third shooting.

A woman who told police she was related to the man who was fatally shot on Flushing Road came up to the crime scene screaming.

"I just had a dream two days ago that he was going to be killed," she told police before going into a police car to be interviewed.

Flint hits 60 homicides for third time since 1986; on pace to break record of 66

By David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com
on November 10, 2012 at 7:00 AM, updated November 10, 2012 at 7:03 AM
FLINT, MI – For just the third time in more than two decades, Flint will finish the year with at least 60 homicides.

The city is on pace to eclipse its record 66 homicides set two years ago.

The city recorded its 60th homicide this year Tuesday, Nov. 6, when 21-year-old Issac Burton was shot to death in a vehicle around 6:30 p.m. outside a liquor store on Flushing Road near Milbourne Avenue.

Police have not announced any suspects or motive for the crime. His family could not be reached for comment.

Curtis Hunter Jr., 53, of Flint, said better parenting and education are needed to quell the violence.

"Then these 15- and 16-year-olds wouldn't be going out with shotguns shooting people," said Hunter. "I have four kids -- all of them went to college out of the north end of Flint. These kids have to get up out of here."

Over the last 11 months, the city has seen victims as young as 14 to as old as 92.

Motives behind the slayings have varied but many can be best summed up as quarrels between people, said Police Chief Alvern Lock, adding people need to find a way to resolve conflicts without grabbing a gun and shooting someone.

"There needs to be some conflict resolution on the part of the citizens that do that kind of stuff," said Lock.

Homicides have also happened in clusters, with 49 of the 60 homicides occurred within three days of another.

A woman is held as she screams after becoming emotional on the 200 block of Mary Street off of King Avenue in Flint's north side at the scene of a deadly shooting on Oct. 3. The victim's brother identified the 55th homicide victim this year as Darrius Robinson, 23.Ryan Garza | MLive.com

Flint is not alone in its struggle to tamp down homicides.

Camden, New Jersey, which usurped Flint as the city with the highest per capita homicide rate last year, has also seen a spike in slayings.

Camden, a city of 77,000, posted 47 homicides last year but has already passed that with 57 homicides as of Friday, Nov. 9 – just one shy of its 1995 record.

While Camden is in the midst of disbanding its 273-member police department and turning it into a countywide force, the Flint Police Department got a boost Tuesday, Nov. 6, when voters resoundingly supported a 6-mill tax increase over five years that will raise more than $5 million in the first year.

The millage was only meant to "stabilize" the department that was largely funded through grants, and losing dollars because of falling property values. While some have called for 30 to 50 new officers, officials have said just 10 new officers will be added initially to boost the nearly 120-member force.

Patrice Askew, 51, of Mt Morris, has a daughter and grandkids living in the north side of Flint and used to live in the city herself. She said there needs to be more cops on the street, especially since the millage passed.

"I think they need to improve that (area)," she said.

The city has also stressed its partnerships – the Michigan State police doubled its presence inside the city last year, with more on the way. Troopers focus more on proactive policing such as making traffic stops.

The city lockup opened last month, giving police a place to lodge less-violent criminals.

But no matter what the city does, it doesn't seem to quell the killings. Lock reiterates that a lot of crime prevention is dependent on the people.
"We are in the process of doing everything we can to investigate these homicides, but we need cooperation from the community to prevent these things from happening," Lock said. "Police is part of the solution, not the complete solution."

In the responses to the story, several M-live readers expressed outrage that the Journal printed the name of the accuser, but not the accused. The readers believed the Journal put the woman in jeopardy.

Afternoon fire started by man living on the same street, a neighbor suspects

FLINT, MI -- A woman living two properties down from an afternoon fire in an abandoned house on Flint's northeast side Nov. 10 said she knows who did it.

Kerry Barons, 44, was told by the fire battalion chief at the scene not to share the name of the man she suspects of lighting the fire around 12:30 p.m. on the 2900 block of Agree Avenue. But she told MLive that he lives just down the road.

Barons said she suspects him because he has loudly voiced his intentions in the past.

"He gets drunk and starts shouting how he's going to burn down all these houses," Barons said.

She said he hated people on the street he considered "trashy."

Flint Fire Battalion Chief Darren Clemons said it's typical for houses on this side of town to go down in flames, but not during the day.

The man who once lived in the house had passed away and it had been abandoned for some time, Clemons said.

Neighbors told him that all kinds of people have been seen going in and out of the house since it was abandoned, he said.

Clemons said he expects the fire investigation to conclude it was arson.

As of Oct. 29, there have been 290 suspected arsons in 2012. There was 300 suspected arsons at this time last year.

Barons and her housemates, along with a number of neighborhood residents, stood outside and watched as the fire department let the house fire burn itself out before extinguishing it.

Jimmy Davis, 49, walked to the fire from his house two blocks away. He's been in Flint for 45 years, he said.

"People see this and want to pack up and leave," Davis said. "I care about this town, but it's going downhill."

He said everybody in the neighborhood looks out for one another, but there's a criminal element making its way east across Dort Highway.

Grant Osterman, 42, was watching the fire with Davis.

"Just because GM left doesn't mean people have to act like animals," he said.

Barons said she and her two housemates constantly hear gun shots behind her house. The area is full of children, she said.

"I'm going to make darn sure they get the guy," Barons said.

FLINT, MI -- No one was injured after bullets struck homes Nov. 8 on West MClellan and Prospect streets, according to police reports.

Dave-did you notice how the map with pins indicating murders had the majority going down the center of Flint and on either side of M L King.

Yet the houses to be demolished are in the Pierson area and the NE quadrant.
