GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- The city of Flint, Genesee County and the county Land Bank have spent a combined $36.5 million in federal grants awarded to fight blight in distressed communities, local officials announced Friday, Jan. 25.

Since 2010, the funds were used to build or rehabilitate 177 homes in nine Genesee County communities and Flint. Another 1,400 structures were demolished, according to the Land Bank, which held a news conference highlighting the benefits of the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program.

"This has truly been one of those collaborative, shared service ventures you hear so much about," county Treasurer Deb Cherry said at the event at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Flint.

Cherry said the city and county have applied for even more grant funding to continue the work.

"We're not stopping here," she said. "The future of our communities is based on making them look good."

Flint has spent $16.4 million, the Land Bank has spent $11.9 million and Genesee County has spent $8.2 million, which benefited the local economy and helped create jobs, according to the Land Bank.

Flint Mayor Dayne Walling said the federal funding, awarded as far back as 2009, helped the area deal with the "extraordinary challenges" presented by the Great Recession.

"Overall, in my view, the Neighborhood Stabilization Program has been a major success in our community," he said. "It's allowed us to have the resources to meet the challenges we know we have."

How much of it was spent on the Department of Human services building located on Clio Rd.

Too bad Flint spent most of that money at the last minute hiring out of the county people to do the work at a high cost because is was being run by Walling the man without a plan or organizational skills. In the words of th State of Michigan, HUD, DOE, Wallings administration is mismagement! Last place is what Walling achieves, thats why Flint is #1 in crime.

Hmmm... That much money and it looks worse day after day. People are abandoning houses faster than you can possibly tear them down. I agree with Ted. Make Flint safer and people will stay and make their homes and neighborhoods nicer. But now people feel that it's a lost cause.

Neighborhood stabilization program; letting houses in some areas rot and collapse while spending megabucks in "desirable" areas
.

i'M WONDERING.... Could 36.5 million build Flint a Jail large enough to to take the criminals off the streets? Hmm. Lower Crime! People Own, People Maintain. But this is not the plan.
