David Cox Jr. was named chief of the Flint Fire Department Wednesday.
Dominic Adams | MLive.com FLINT, MI – The Flint Fire Department has a new fire chief.
Dave Cox Jr., a retired captain, was named chief by emergency manager Ed Kurtz at a news conference Wednesday, April 10.
Cox worked in fire prevention and inspection when he retired more than a decade ago. He worked for Flint for 23 years.
“One of the positives of hiring somebody who used to work for the department is they know the demographics,” said Council President Scott Kincaid. “I’m pleased that the emergency manager has recognized the importance of having a fire chief.”
Kurtz said there were 10 people who applied for the job.
"We were really pleased to get someone who had that front line experience," Kurtz said of Cox.
Cox spent 11 years as a firefighter before moving to the fire prevention bureau.
Police Chief Alvern Lock was acting fire chief before Cox was named chief.
Former Public Safety Director Barnett Jones was in charge of the department before resigning after it was discovered he also worked as head of security for Detroit's Water & Sewerage Department.

I haven't agreed with many of Ed Kurtz's decisions he's made, but this time he got it right ith Dave Cox. When my house burnt in 1993, Dave was the Arson Investigator at the time, and he helped me catch the 3 young boys who committed the crime. Dave will be a huge asset, especially with this out of control Arson situation that seems to be consuming parts of the City of Flint. Good job, Ed, myself and the City of Flint thank you!! |

Hey flygirl, City of Flint only has ONE arson investigator! Do you think the fire chief's duties include arson investigation in this city? |
