FLINT (WJRT) -
(04/10/13) - Flint has announced it's reducing water bills for low and fixed income homeowners.
Wednesday, Emergency Manager Ed Kurtz announced the city has created a poverty exemption for water service.
This is only available to homeowners who qualify for the property tax poverty exemption.
The city will eliminate the ready to use fee and lower the affidavit rate from $300 to $200.
"We certainly don't want to shut water off to senior citizens, to people that have lived in the city their whole lives and paid their taxes, and are now faced with a situation like this where they can't afford their water," Kurtz said.
Kurtz says the water poverty exemption could cut water bills in half.
It goes into effect July 1. |

These forms are available on the City of Flint's website, but they need to be UPDATED, and anyone who might qualify will likely need a lawyer to explain them and an accountant to help fill them out. Some who might qualify may not have had to file an income tax return which is required to be attached (among other things). Looks like the expense of assistance completing the forms won't save anything in the long run.
