Eight weapons stolen from Traverse City gun store found in Davison Township garage

DAVISON TOWNSHIP, MI – Two men are in custody after a tip turned up eight guns that had been reported stolen from Traverse City.
Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell said his office was contacted by deputies from Grand Traverse County just before 6 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, about the possibility that guns taken in robbery 10 hours earlier were at a house on S. State Road in Davison Township.
A Genesee County deputy crept toward the house and saw two men and the weapons through a garage window.
A Davison man, 20, and a Traverse City man, 21, were arrested at the house after a search warrant led to the discovery that the guns had been moved to the attic of the garage.
Police recovered five assault-style rifles, three handguns and four mason jars with marijuana inside.
“You don’t go deer hunting with these type of weapons,” said Pickell. “You have to assume one of two things – they’re going to sell them or they’re going to use them themselves.”
After getting consent to search the home, deputies found the weapons hidden in the attic of the garage, Pickell said.
The men were expected to be arraigned on the charges today.
Law enforcement in northern Michigan believe the men also were involved in burglaries in four other businesses there.
“It’s pretty good police work,” Pickell said. “It took three and a half hours from the time we got the phone call to the arrest.”

Firearms stolen from Shooters gun range in Grand Traverse County

GRAND TRAVERSE CO -- Two suspects have been arrested in connection to several rifles and handguns that were stolen from Shooters Indoor Gun Range in Blair Township on Friday morning.
According to WEYI in Flint, the two male suspects were arrested at S. State Rd in Davison Township in Genesee County. The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office called the Genesee County Sheriff's Department around 6 a.m. on Friday to tell them about the possible Flint connection.
The sheriff in Flint says that the men were living in Grand Traverse County and were found at one of the men's grandmother's home in Davison Township.
The stolen guns were recovered.
The alarm at Shooters sounded at 1:49 a.m. when two people broke into the store.
According to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office, when deputies arrived, the side window and front door were broken into, as well as some display cases that held multiple handguns.
Surveillance video shows two people inside of the building leaving with the stolen handguns and rifles.
Investigators say there could be more people involved in the alleged crime and that the suspects could be connected to other crimes in the area that occured around the same time.
Detectives say that around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, a woman also called 9-1-1 to report suspicious behavior that was going on in the parking lot of Francisco's Market and Deli on Silver Lake Road.
"A lady had seen a male subject running in front of the business shortly before the alarm went off at the business," said Lt. Christopher Barsheff of the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies arrived on scene to find a broken door and window but nothing was stolen.
Barsheff says it's possible that the break-ins are connected, and that the suspects could have been trying to distract authorities from Shooters by trying to get into Francisco's.
"There's a good possibility that they're connected," said Lt. Barsheff. "Due to the fact that the incidents were a short amount of time from each other, and the distance apart was fairly close."
Hours later, employees at the Verizon store just two doors down from Francisco's showed up for work and discovered a possible break-in attempt through their windows.
"They (detectives) were looking around at the sidewalks and looking across the windows and looking around a little bit because the hole in the wall there looks suspiciously like a BB and we actually found a BB right there and so they took that in as evidence," said Verizon employee, Mamie Brodersen.
Just down the road from Shooters, Menards reported that someone attempted to break in through one of their gates early Friday morning too.
Investigators say that it's a possibility that everything is connected, but they are still investigating. |
