There has been discussion that Flint would hire more police. But lately there has been talk that the police union is not in favor of the administration efforts to recruit new part-time officers and only pay them only $15 an hour. This is less than the original starting pay for an officer.
Will they have any benefits?
Will these potential officers already be certified or will Flint pay to get them certified?
Who wants these part time jobs? Are there laid off officers needing to work to keep their certification valid? |

Lately I've seen several local officers who have "retired" early. My 23 years with FPD were very rewarding, but times have changed. There is no wonder there is an exodus. Administration isn't supportive, pay and benefits are being cut, demands are being increased, and the dangers of the job are greater than ever. I'm proud of my service, and give my utmost respect to those who have served or are serving. Civilians will NEVER understand. Best wishes to all the men and women in blue and brown around the world |

Maybe some of these retired officers will apply for the part time jobs to have extra $ and keep their certification.
If Flint has to pay to train them and get them certified, there will be no benefit. |

•Police staffing, which currently includes 99 sworn officers and 15 civilians, would be increased by 10 part-time officers, and a telephone response unit would be added as a result of the planned 911 consolidation. Seven of the 10 part-time positions would be paid for by, and assigned to, Hurley Medical Center.
•With the pending receipt of a $7 million loan from the state, the general fund deficit is expected to be eliminated by June 30.
•The budget warns that the failure of either of two public safety millages that are up for renewal in 2017 would be "disastrous

Early, in a report to the state, had proposed a police force of 108. With 99 sworn officers the city is below that number and more are leaving. (2 recently)
Hurley will be getting more bang for their buck with the part time officers. But 7 to Hurley only leaves 3 who will work 12 hour shifts and who will be limited in their hours per week.
M Coles had ads on-line for some other part time positions and the pay is higher. When Phoenix was in Detroit recruiting officers with a starting salary of $48,500 at least one Flint officer left. Word is he loves it. |

With only 99 sworn officers, they are now doing mandatory overtime. Since these are 12 hour shifts, how much overtime is allowed? Are tired and stressed officers putting the city at risk for mistakes and potential lawsuits?
The city has postings for full and part time officers but where are the new officers? Don't forget that Hurley will be paying for 7 of the 10 part time officers to be hired. That leaves only 3 new part time officers to help our regular force. Since they obviously will only be able to work 28 to 29 hours per week during a 2 week pay period, this is very limited help. |

It seems officers are getting trained on the use of military style weapons. Are all going to be trained?
The department is also selling confiscated guns instead of destroying them. |
