BY BRANDON CHAMPION
Michigan is home to two of the worst run cities in America, according to one study.
Released by the personal finance website Wallethub on Monday, Detroit and Flint rank 149 and 143, respectively, out of 150 cities examined in the study titled "2017's Best and Worst Run Cities in America."
The study, which aims to rate the ability and effectiveness of the city governments in America's 150 largest cities, examines metrics across several key categories including financial stability, education, health, safety, economy and infrastructure and pollution.
Detroit ranked 139th or lower in every category except education where it was 56th. The Motor City was ranked last in three categories including quality of city services, financial stability and economy. Only Washington D.C. was ranked lower overall.
Detroit is also among the leaders in long-term debt outstanding per capita, violent crime rate, unemployment and percent of population living in poverty.
The data crunch by 24/7 Wall Street, a notable financial news and opinion company, was not kind to Michigan.
Flint ranked near the bottom in every category except infrastructure and pollution where it was 98th and financial stability where it was 17th.
Its unemployment rate is also among the highest and it has the highest percent of population living in poverty in America, according to the study.
It wasn't all bad news for Michigan, however. Warren was ranked as the 30th best run city in America and Grand Rapids finished at No. 34 on the list.
Nampa, Idaho, Provo, Utah, Boise, Idaho, Missoula, Montana and Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky are the five best run cities in America, according to the study. |
