State approves $740,000 grant for Midland jail
Wednesday, January 31, 2007
THE SAGINAW NEWS
The state has given Midland County more than $740,000 for its new jail.
While the grant is about $10,000 less than pledged when planners secured it in 2000, the lump sum can accrue interest before construction starts on the 250-bed correctional facility on Bay City Road near Rockwell, said Midland County Communications Director Jon Becker.
"We're ecstatic to receive the grant because given the state's budget, they could have revoked it," he said.
Midland County officials had to show the state proof of starting the project. After Administrator/Controller David Benda reported spending more than $850,000 on the 30-acre parcel and legal fees, the state gave Midland the grant.
The lockup will replace a 98-bed jail downtown that officials have deemed too small and lacking in modern security features.
Voters approved $25 million for the project. Organizers plan on opening the jail in January 2009. v |

Note, the grant is about 3% of the total cost of the project...$25 Million.
Think Flint could take on a $25 Million project? Do we have the financial wherewithal? |
