The government looking at expanding a pioneering scheme in Flint, one of the poorest US cities, which involves razing entire districts and returning the land to nature.

Local politicians believe the city must contract by as much as 40 per cent, concentrating the dwindling population and local services into a more viable area.

The radical experiment is the brainchild of Dan Kildee, treasurer of Genesee County, which includes Flint.

Having outlined his strategy to Barack Obama during the election campaign, Mr. Kildee has now been approached by the US government and a group of charities who want him to apply what he has learnt to the rest of the country.

Brainchild and Kildee two words that blend like water and oil. Round up all the sheep, move them. ( by force if necessary) into a controled area, disarm them, and supply them with all their daily needs from a government mandated list made up by Barcako and his cronies. The ultimate dream of all libs has now come true.
Remind you of anyone??

Kim Jong Kildee.

Kildee - bulldoze everything.

Walling - Combine lots & build McMansions.

Dave, both ideas suck.

This massive bulldozing plan makes my eyes bleed. Doesn't anyone remember "urban renewal?" Isn't this shockingly similar?

Surely there is a solution somewhere in the middle -- demolish the bad, keep the good; but that takes too much work, I guess.

By the way, show me ONE situation where massive demolition led to revitalization.

to actually address your point, Paris is one example although their motivation was slightly different... they had an expanding middle class.

Hiroshima
Dresden
Berlin
Tokyo
(I know, not the kind of demolition you mean.)

BTW, the original "shrink the city" plan was to simply cut off city services and abandon those areas. Now, it seems to be move the people into houses owned by the land bank.

Schreef, the Paris demolition did lead to revitalization, ONLY because the biggest part of the plan was building new in place of the old (if I read the article correctly).

I suppose my point is that a vacant lot will not lead to revitalization faster than a (properly closed up) vacant building.

The revitalization succeeded because they appropriately assessed and addressed the needs of the city. The greening up would expedite the corraling. I don't think it has anything to do with attracting future business. "Decline is a fact of life in Flint. Resisting it is like resisting gravity." Forefathers would be proud, wouldn't they?

Not on our block. We're an island in a sea of blight.
